Technical editing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Editing#Technical_editing
"Technical
editing involves reviewing text written on a technical topic, and identifying errors
(grammar, punctuation and use of words) related to the use of language in general or
adherence to a specific style guide.
Technical editing may include any of the following: correction of grammatical mistakes,
misspellings, mistyping, incorrect punctuation, inconsistencies in usages, poorly
structured sentences, wrong scientific terms, wrong units and dimensions, inconsistency in
significant figures, technical ambivalence, technical disambiguation, correction of
statements conflicting with general scientific knowledge, correction of synopsis, content,
index, headings and subheadings, correcting data and chart presentation in a research
paper or report, correcting errors in citations.
This activity ensures that documentation is of good quality."
Basic proof-checking
Close reading and correction of a manuscript's typographical errors, correcting spelling
(both of the right words and of the "wrong" words) and how the sentences
"read" to make sense. In short, spelling and grammar only.
Yes, you can do this yourself - to a point - with any good word processor, but software
will not correct words used in an inapproriate context or words which are spelled
correctly but mean something completely different than intended (eg: "polling there
sucks up" used for "pulling their socks up").
The word processor software can only take you so far - it does not understand meaning,
only sentence formation and spelling.
Conventional indexing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index_%28publishing%29#Conventional_indexing
"The
indexer reads through the text, identifying indexable concepts (those for which the text
provides useful information and which will be of relevance for the text's readership). The
indexer creates index headings, to represent those concepts, which are phrased such that
they can be found when in alphabetical order (so 'indexing process' rather than 'how to
create an index'). These headings and their associated locators (indicators to position in
the text) are entered into specialist indexing software which handles the formatting of
the index and facilitates the editing phase. The index is then edited to impose
consistency throughout the index.
Indexers must analyze the text to enable presentation of concepts and ideas in the index
that may not be named within the text. The index is intended to help the reader,
researcher, or information professional, rather than the author, find information, so the
professional indexer must act as a liaison between the text and the its ultimate
user."
